What are the jet ski rules in Dubai?
The core rules are simple: ride only in designated zones and permitted hours, wear a life jacket, keep away from swimming areas and hotel beaches, and make sure the jet ski is licensed. Dubai's rules on jet ski use and licensing date back to Executive Council Regulation No. 3 of 2008, which requires jet skis to be licensed, registered and insured, limits use to specified maritime areas, and requires riders to wear a life jacket.
Enforcement is real. In July 2025, Dubai Police and the Dubai Maritime Authority reported a joint campaign that resulted in 431 fines and 41 jet skis impounded. The violations listed included underage riders, expired licences, riding in restricted areas such as swimming zones and hotel beaches, riding outside permitted hours and not wearing life jackets. Reported fines start at AED 1,000 and go higher for more serious offences.
Rental companies also have their own obligations. A 2023 Dubai Maritime Authority circular required jet ski rental operators to fit tracking and remote control systems and to programme their jet skis to respect restricted speed zones.

If you buy your own jet ski, it is different: the craft must be licensed and registered, and you will need comprehensive insurance. Under the 2008 regulation an individual jet ski licence is valid for two years. Procedures have changed since 2008, so check the current licensing and registration requirements with the Dubai Maritime Authority before you buy.

How do you look after your own jet ski in the UAE?
Flush it after every ride in salt water, rinse the outside, and keep the battery healthy through the summer heat. Gulf water is very salty and warm, and salt left in the cooling system and on metal parts causes corrosion fast.
