SiFly Stellar R 5'8 carbon eFoil board with mast, propeller and hydrofoil wings

Quick answer: an eFoil is an electric surfboard with a hydrofoil wing under it, so it lifts out of the water and glides silently above the surface. A complete eFoil in the UAE costs about AED 35,000 to AED 65,000. For a first board, most riders should pick a big, stable board: the Lift5 Cruiser 5'4 (83 L) or, on a tighter budget, the inflatable Jetwave Club Air 230.

This guide explains how an eFoil works, how long the battery lasts, how hard it is to learn, where you can ride in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, and what owning one really costs in AED. Every board below is in stock in our eFoil boards collection. eFoils and their batteries ship within the UAE only.

What is an eFoil?

An eFoil is a short surfboard with a battery inside, an electric motor and propeller on a mast below it, and a hydrofoil wing at the bottom of the mast. You control speed with a wireless hand remote. As you speed up, the front wing creates lift and raises the board out of the water, so you glide above the surface with almost no drag and no noise. No waves or wind are needed, which suits the flat, warm water off Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Ras Al Khaimah.

The main parts are:

  • Board: carbon fibre on premium boards, inflatable on some beginner and rental boards. It holds the battery.
  • Battery: a sealed lithium-ion pack of about 2.2 to 2.4 kWh on the boards we stock.
  • Mast and propulsion: the motor and propeller, usually with a guard or jet duct for safety.
  • Front and back wings: big front wings lift early and feel stable; smaller wings are faster and carve harder.
  • Remote: a waterproof handheld throttle, often with a screen showing battery and speed.

How long does an eFoil battery last, and how do you charge it?

On the boards we stock, makers quote up to 90 minutes (Lift Gen5 Full Range, 2.2 kWh) or up to 120 minutes (SiFly PowerCell LR, 2.3 kWh) of riding on one charge. Real ride time depends on your weight, wing size, speed and how much time you spend falling and restarting. Learners use more battery per minute than smooth cruisers.

  • Charging time: Lift says the Gen5 battery reaches 80 percent in about an hour. SiFly quotes about 2.5 hours, and Jetwave about 2 hours with its 1,200 W fast charger.
  • Electricity cost: a full charge of about 2.2 kWh costs roughly AED 1 at UAE residential electricity rates.
  • Battery weight: about 12.5 to 14 kg. It drops into the board and you carry it separately.
  • Flying with it: batteries this size are far above airline limits for passenger baggage, so you cannot take your eFoil battery on a normal flight. It has to travel as dangerous goods freight.

A second battery is the easiest way to double your time on the water. We stock the SiFly PowerCell LR spare battery for SiFly boards.

How hard is it to learn to eFoil?

Easier than surfing or kitefoiling, because the motor does the work and you do not need waves or wind. Most people start lying down, move to their knees, then stand, and only then let the board rise onto the foil. With a large board, a big front wing and an instructor, many first-timers get a short flight in their first session or two. Learning to carve, turn on foil and ride smoothly takes longer.

  • Take a lesson or two first. A coach on the water shortens the learning curve a lot and teaches you how to fall safely, away from the foil.
  • Start on the biggest board. More volume means easier balance at low speed. You can move to a smaller board later.
  • Wear a helmet and impact vest. The foil wings are sharp and the board is heavy. See our life jackets guide for vests and buoyancy aids.

How do you choose an eFoil board?

Choose by your weight and skill first, then by how you will use it. Board volume and front wing size matter more than top speed.

First board or family board Progressing rider Experienced or light rider
Board volume 80 L and up (inflatable 230 L is the most stable) 65 to 100 L Under 65 L
Front wing Large, lifts at low speed Medium Small, fast and carvy
Feel Stable and forgiving Sportier, still easy Direct and fast, needs technique
From our range Lift5 Cruiser 5'4, Jetwave Club Air 230, SiFly Stellar R 5'8 Lift5 Sport 4'9, SiFly Stellar S 5'4 Lift5 Pro 4'4

Also check the maximum rider weight. For example, Lift rates the Cruiser to 113 kg, the Sport to 100 kg and the Pro to 86 kg. If several people will share the board, buy for the heaviest rider and the least experienced one.

Where can you ride an eFoil in the UAE?

Only in areas where motorised watercraft are allowed, away from swimmers. In Abu Dhabi, the official Visit Abu Dhabi guide states that eFoils count as personal watercraft (PWCs) under Abu Dhabi Maritime rules: daylight hours only, within one nautical mile of the shore, a life jacket at all times, and at least 60 m from swimmers. It names Al Bateen, Al Maqtaa and Hudayriyat Island as eFoil spots.

In Dubai, jet skis and personal watercraft are regulated by the Dubai Maritime Authority and Dubai Police, with designated riding zones and fines of AED 1,000 for riding outside them or without a life jacket. We could not find a published Dubai rule written specifically for eFoils, so treat your eFoil like a personal watercraft and check with the Dubai Maritime Authority before riding in public waters. Commercial operators run eFoil sessions in areas such as Dubai Marina, and many owners ride from a boat or a private beach.

  • Never ride inside swimming zones or near public beaches full of swimmers.
  • Keep clear of boats, marina channels and harbour entrances.
  • Check the wind forecast. Strong onshore wind and chop make foiling much harder for beginners.
  • Ride in daylight, with a buddy or a boat nearby.

The eFoils we stock in the UAE

These are in stock now, ranked by how well they suit most UAE buyers. Prices are a guide; the product cards on this page show live prices and colours. All ship within the UAE only.

1. Lift5 Cruiser 5'4: best first eFoil to own

Lift's largest Lift5 board: 163 x 70 cm, 83 L, forged carbon, with a 270 Camber Pro front wing and 46 Glide back wing that lift you onto the foil at low speed. The Gen5 Full Range battery (2.2 kWh, IP68) gives up to 90 minutes and locks in without cables or latches. Max rider weight is 113 kg. Lift recommends this size for first-time riders, larger riders and families sharing one board.

  • Pros: very stable, easy take-offs, quick-charging battery, full kit in the box
  • Cons: premium price; full setup weighs about 32 kg
  • Price: around AED 65,000

How much does an eFoil cost in the UAE? A breakdown in AED

The board package is most of the cost. After that, running costs are low, but a spare battery is a big extra.

Spare remote AED 1,300 (SiFly remote) Not stocked separately
Electricity per full charge About AED 1 About AED 1
Safety gear Helmet and impact vest Helmet and impact vest

Compared with renting, ownership makes sense if you will ride often, share the board with family, or keep it on a boat. If you are not sure yet, book a lesson with a licensed operator before you buy. Browse spare wings, batteries and chargers in our eFoil accessories collection.

How do you look after an eFoil in UAE heat and salt water?

  • Rinse everything with fresh water after each session, especially the propeller, mast connections and battery contacts.
  • Keep the battery out of the sun. Never leave it in a hot car or on a sunny deck. Charge and store it somewhere cool and shaded, following the maker's storage charge level.
  • Let it cool before charging. A battery straight off a long session in summer should cool down first.
  • Check the propeller and seals for sand, fishing line and nicks before each ride.
  • Store the board in its bag, out of UV, with the wings removed or protected.

Our verdict

If you are buying your first eFoil, get the biggest, most stable board you can: the Lift5 Cruiser 5'4 if you want Lift's battery and build quality, or the Jetwave Club Air 230 if budget, family use or yacht storage matter more. The SiFly Stellar R is the value pick in carbon. Only go for the Lift5 Sport, Stellar S or Lift5 Pro once you already ride confidently. Take a lesson first, ride away from swimmers, and look after the battery in the heat.

eFoil FAQs

How much does an eFoil cost in Dubai?

A complete eFoil costs about AED 35,000 to AED 65,000 in the UAE. In our range, the Jetwave Club Air 230 inflatable is about AED 35,000, the SiFly Stellar boards about AED 38,500, and the Lift5 Cruiser, Sport and Pro about AED 65,000 each. A spare battery adds about AED 11,900 for SiFly boards. Charging costs about AED 1 per full charge.

How long does an eFoil battery last?

The makers quote up to 90 minutes for the Lift Gen5 Full Range battery and up to 120 minutes for the SiFly PowerCell LR on one charge. Real ride time is lower for heavier riders, high speeds, small wings and beginners who fall and restart often. Charging takes about 1 to 2.5 hours depending on the board and charger.

Is an eFoil hard to learn?

It is easier than most board sports because the motor gives you speed without waves or wind. Start on a large board with a big front wing, take a lesson, and progress from lying to kneeling to standing before you let the board fly. Many first-timers get a short flight in their first session or two; smooth turns take longer.

Do you need a licence to ride an eFoil in the UAE?

In Abu Dhabi, the official Visit Abu Dhabi guide says eFoils are treated as personal watercraft under Abu Dhabi Maritime rules, with daylight-only riding, a life jacket, staying within one nautical mile of shore and 60 m from swimmers. We could not find a Dubai rule written specifically for eFoils, so check with the Dubai Maritime Authority before riding in public waters.

Where can I eFoil in Dubai?

Ride only where motorised watercraft are allowed and away from swimmers. Licensed operators run eFoil sessions in areas such as Dubai Marina, and many owners ride from boats or private beaches. Public swimming beaches are not suitable. Because Dubai has no eFoil-specific rule we could verify, confirm your spot with the Dubai Maritime Authority or your marina.

What is the best eFoil for beginners?

A big, stable board with a large front wing. From our range, that means the Lift5 Cruiser 5'4 (83 L, up to 113 kg riders), the Jetwave Club Air 230 inflatable (230 L), or the SiFly Stellar R 5'8 (120 L). Smaller boards like the Lift5 Pro 4'4 are faster but much harder to learn on.

Can I take my eFoil battery on a plane?

No, not as normal baggage. eFoil batteries hold over 2 kWh, far above the lithium battery limits airlines allow for passengers. If you need to move one abroad, it has to be shipped as dangerous goods freight through a specialist. We deliver eFoils and batteries within the UAE only.
