Paddling an inflatable SUP off a Dubai beach at sunrise

For most adults in the UAE, the right inflatable SUP is an all-round board about 10'6 to 11'6 long, 32 to 34 inches wide and 6 inches thick, with a max load well above your weight. Paddle early in the day, avoid offshore wind, and never leave the board pumped up in the sun or in a hot car.

Below we cover sizes, PSI, heat and wind, then rank the boards we stock. See the full range in our SUP boards collection.

Inflatable or hard SUP: which is better for the UAE?

For most people here, inflatable is the better buy. It rolls into a backpack, fits in a car boot and lives in a cupboard, which matters when you live in an apartment.

A hard board glides a little better and is ready the moment you reach the beach. But it needs a roof rack, wall space and a shaded place to store it. Inflatables also tend to shrug off a bump against rocks or a harbour wall that would ding an epoxy board.

The trade-offs are real. You spend time pumping before and rinsing and drying after every session. Cheap inflatables can flex in the middle and feel bouncy. A quality inflatable at the right pressure feels close to solid underfoot.

What size paddle board do you need for your weight?

Pick a board whose max load is clearly higher than the heaviest person who will use it, plus any bag, cool box or child you carry. If you are close to the limit, go up a size.

Board makers give the limit in different ways: some say max rider weight, some say max payload or max load. A max load includes everything on the board, so a 100 kg rider limit and a 180 kg payload are not the same thing.

Length

Most paddlers do well on a board between 10 and 12 feet. Around 10'6 to 10'8 is the classic all-round size: easy to turn, stable and short enough to carry. Touring boards run from about 11'6 upwards. They are longer and narrower, so they go faster and track straighter, but they feel less stable.

Width

Width is stability. Most SUPs are 32 to 34 inches wide. If you are a beginner, heavy, or want to carry a child or a dog, start at 32 to 34 inches. A 30 inch board is quicker and better for lighter, more confident paddlers.

Thickness

Six inches is the adult standard for inflatables. It adds buoyancy and stiffness. Thinner boards, around 4.7 inches, sit closer to the water and suit lighter riders and teenagers, but they can bend under a heavy adult.

You are Start with Why
Beginner, up to about 85 kg 10'6 to 11'0, 32 in, 6 in thick Stable and easy to turn
Beginner over 85 kg 10'8 to 12'0, 34 in, 6 in thick, high max load Width and volume keep you dry
Paddling with a child, dog or cool box 12'0 or longer, 34 in Deck space and payload
Lighter adult or teen wanting speed 11'0 to 11'2, 30 in Less drag, better glide
Longer trips, fitness paddling 11'4 and up, 30 to 32 in Tracks straighter, covers distance

How much PSI should an inflatable SUP have?

Pump to the range printed near the valve, usually 12 to 20 PSI depending on the board. Never go over the maximum. A board that is too soft flexes, feels wobbly and is slower.

The boards we stock show how much this varies. The Aqua Marina Atlas has a 15 PSI maximum. The Sevenseas boards recommend 12 to 16 PSI. The Jobe Aero Varna lists 14 to 20 PSI. Gladiator says its Origin dropstitch is rated to 26 PSI, which tells you about material strength, not that you should pump it that hard.

A double-action pump moves air on the up stroke and the down stroke, so it is quicker at the start. Many let you switch to single action for the last few PSI, when it gets hard to push. If you paddle often, an electric pump that runs off the car saves your arms in the heat.

Can you leave an inflatable paddle board in the sun?

Not pumped up and not for long. Air expands as it heats, so pressure rises inside the board. In UAE summer sun that can stress seams and glue.

Board makers give simple rules. Keep the board in shade on the beach. If there is no shade, let some air out. On the water it is fine at full pressure, because the sea keeps it cool. Never leave an inflated board in a parked car; one maker notes that a car interior can heat up by an average of 40 F (about 22 C) within an hour. Deflate it fully before it goes in the boot.

After the trip, rinse with fresh water, dry it in the shade and store it indoors, not on a sunny balcony.

When and where can you paddleboard in the UAE?

October to April is the comfortable season. In summer, go at sunrise, when the sea is often flat and the heat is lower, and be off the water before late morning.

Good spots in Dubai include Kite Beach, Umm Suqeim, Sunset Beach, the Palm Jumeirah and Dubai Harbour, where rental and lesson operators work from the beach. Al Mamzar, near the Sharjah border, is another popular calm-water spot. Mangrove channels are good on a SUP too; our guide to the best kayaking spots in the UAE covers the main mangrove and sea routes, and most of them work on a board.

Rules can differ by beach, marina and emirate, and some areas are closed to watercraft. Ask the beach operator or lifeguards before you launch, keep away from swimming zones and boat channels, and paddle in daylight.

Shamal and offshore wind

Wind decides your day. Paddle out into the wind first, so it helps you home. The shamal is a north-westerly wind that can reach around 60 km/h and make the sea rough to very rough. On those days, stay home or stay in a sheltered lagoon.

Offshore wind is the quiet danger. It looks calm near the beach because the land blocks the waves, but it pushes you out to sea. Paddle UK research found that in a Force 4 wind of 18 to 20 mph a paddler can drift about a mile in 30 minutes. British Canoeing advises stand up paddlers to avoid offshore winds. If you get caught, lie down on the board and paddle with your arms, which cuts drift a lot compared with standing.

How to choose an inflatable SUP: the criteria that matter

  • Max load or max rider weight. Above your weight plus kit, with room to spare.
  • Width. 32 to 34 inches for beginners and heavier riders; 30 inches for speed.
  • Thickness. 6 inches for adults.
  • Construction. Double-layer or fusion-laminated dropstitch and reinforced rails feel stiffer and last longer than single-layer boards, but weigh a little more.
  • What is in the box. Paddle, pump, leash, fin, bag and repair kit. A carbon paddle is lighter than fibreglass or aluminium and makes long sessions easier.
  • Board weight. The boards below that state a weight are 9.3 to 10.9 kg. You carry it from the car, often across hot sand.
  • Warranty. From 3 to 5 years on the boards below where stated.

Who should not buy an inflatable SUP?

If you surf proper waves often, a hard board turns and catches waves far better. If you have a villa with a garage and paddle from the same beach every morning, a hard board skips the pumping. And if you want to fish seriously or cover long distances sitting down, a kayak may suit you better; our kayak buying guide covers sit-on-top and fishing models.

What else do you need?

The board set covers the basics. For UAE water, add these:

  • Buoyancy aid. A 50N buoyancy aid is the usual choice for SUP for competent swimmers. Our life jacket guide explains levels and kids sizes.
  • Leash. Always wear it. In wind, an inflatable board blows away faster than you can swim.
  • Dry bag. For keys, phone and water, strapped under the bungee. The Overboard 20L roll-top dry bag fits most decks.
  • Repair kit. Oyster shells and rocks at launch points can nick the PVC. A spare like the Jobe Aero SUP repair kit lives in the car.
  • Seat. A clip-on Jobe SUP seat turns a board with seat D-rings into a sit-down kayak for kids or tired legs.

Inflatable SUP checklist

  • Max load above your weight plus kit
  • 32 to 34 inch width if you are new or heavy
  • Pump to the PSI on the valve, never above the maximum
  • Leash on, buoyancy aid on
  • Check the wind direction and speed before you go
  • Board in the shade on the beach; let air out if there is none
  • Deflate fully before it goes in the car
  • Rinse with fresh water, dry in shade, store indoors

Verdict

For most UAE adults, the Gladiator Origin 10'8 is the safe first board: wide, stable and complete at a fair price. Lighter paddlers who want to cover distance should look at the Jobe Aero Varna 11.0, and keen paddlers will enjoy the carbon paddle and stiffness of the Gladiator Elite 11'4. Heavy riders and families should go straight to the Aqua Marina Atlas or Gladiator Pro 10'8. On a tight budget, the Flame gets you on the water from AED 1,150, though its build specs are less detailed than the branded boards.

Inflatable SUP FAQs

What is the best inflatable paddle board for beginners in the UAE?

A wide, 6 inch thick all-round board around 10'6 to 11'0 is easiest to learn on. Look for 32 to 34 inches of width and a max load well above your weight. The Gladiator Origin 10'8 at 34 inches wide is our first pick for most beginners, and the Flame is the budget option.

What size SUP do I need if I weigh 90 to 100 kg?

Choose a 34 inch wide, 6 inch thick board of 10'8 or longer with a high stated limit. The Gladiator Pro 10'8 lists 135 kg and the Aqua Marina Atlas 12'0 lists a 180 kg payload. Avoid thin 4.7 inch boards and narrow 30 inch boards until you are confident.

Can I leave my inflatable SUP in the car in Dubai?

Only if it is fully deflated and rolled. A parked car in the sun gets very hot quickly, and the air in an inflated board expands as it heats, which stresses the seams. Even deflated, take it indoors when you can, because long heat exposure is hard on glue and PVC.

How long does it take to pump up an inflatable SUP?

It depends on the pump, the board size and the target pressure. One board maker says about 12 minutes to reinflate with an electric pump. A hand pump takes more effort, especially for the last few PSI. A double-action pump is faster at the start, and an electric pump that plugs into the car saves your arms on a hot morning.

Is it safe to paddleboard in the shamal?

Usually not. The shamal is a strong north-westerly wind that can make the sea rough to very rough. On those days, either stay off the water or choose a sheltered lagoon or mangrove channel. Always check the forecast and be most careful of any wind blowing from the land out to sea.

Do I need a life jacket on a paddle board in the UAE?

It is the sensible choice, and rules vary by beach, marina and operator, so ask before you launch. A 50N buoyancy aid is the usual pick for competent swimmers because it lets you paddle and climb back on. Children and weak swimmers need more support. Always wear your leash too, since the board is your best flotation.

When is the best time of year to paddleboard in the UAE?

October to April is the most comfortable season, with pleasant air and water. In summer you can still paddle, but go at sunrise, finish before late morning, drink plenty of water and cover up. Winter brings more windy days, so check the forecast before every trip.
