Hiking Backpacks UAE 2026: What Size, Fit and Back System for Hatta and Jebel Jais
تم النشر بـ ADVENTURES HUB TEAM

Quick answer: for most UAE hikes, buy a 20 to 30 litre daypack with a ventilated mesh back, a real hipbelt and room for at least 3 litres of water. Go up to 32 to 50 litres only for long days, winter overnights or trips abroad. Fit to your torso length matters more than the brand.
This guide is about choosing the right size, fit and back system for UAE trails, from Hatta to Jebel Jais. Every pack we pick below is in stock in our hiking backpacks collection, priced in AED and delivered across the UAE. If you already know you want an Osprey and just need the right model, our Osprey in the UAE guide goes model by model.
What size hiking backpack do you need for UAE trails?
For a half-day hike, 18 to 24 litres is enough. For a full day, 25 to 30 litres. Those bands come from the Washington Trails Association pack guide; in the UAE, water simply takes more of the space.
How the litres map to real UAE trips:
- 18 to 24 L: short marked routes and half-day hikes, such as a Hatta loop or the 2.5 km Upper Shepherd Walk on Jebel Jais.
- 25 to 32 L: full-day hikes in the Hajar Mountains, routes like the 9 km Hidden Pond trail on Jebel Jais (about 6 hours), and anything where you carry a winter layer.
- 35 to 45 L: long days with extra layers, or a light overnight if you share the tent and stove.
- 45 to 50 L: a standard one or two night trip, per the same WTA guide.
- 50 to 70 L: three to seven nights, which in practice means treks abroad or long winter trips in the mountains.
Do not buy big "just in case". A half-empty 50 litre pack is heavier and hotter than a full 26 litre one. Buy for the trips you do most.
How much water should your hiking pack carry in the UAE?
Plan for at least 3 litres per person. That is the minimum the Jebel Jais visitor site tells hikers to carry, and it also says to bring rehydration drinks as well as water. A litre of water weighs about a kilogram, so 3 litres adds roughly 3 kg before you pack anything else.
A thin daypack with no hipbelt puts all of that on your shoulders. A padded hipbelt moves most of it to your hips. Also check:
- A hydration sleeve close to your back, so heavy water rides near your spine.
- Side pockets that hold a 1 litre bottle for a backup electrolyte drink.
Mesh back vs padded back: which is better in UAE heat?
A tensioned mesh back is better for most UAE hikers. It holds the pack a few centimetres off your back so air can move, and you finish with a less soaked shirt. A padded foam back sits flat against you, which feels stable but traps heat.
The trade-off: a suspended mesh back moves the load slightly away from your body, so it can feel less stable when you scramble over wadi boulders. If you scramble a lot, a closer-fitting pack suits you better. For long, hot, exposed slopes, choose the mesh.
In our picks, the Osprey Hikelite, Stratos and Rook use Osprey's AirSpeed mesh back, the CamelBak Rim Runner uses an Air Support back panel, and the Lowe Alpine Vector uses Air Mesh. The Matador Beast28 uses a flexible spring steel frame instead, which trades some airflow for a pack that folds into its own sack.
How do you fit a hiking backpack?
Packs are sized by torso length, not your height. Measure from the bony bump where your neck meets your shoulders (the C7 vertebra) down to the level of the top of your hip bones. Ask someone to help, because it is very hard to measure on your own.
Then fit the pack in this order:
- Load it with some weight, ideally what you will carry on a hike.
- Close the hipbelt so it sits on top of your hip bones, then tighten it. The WTA guide puts the share the hipbelt should carry at around 80 percent of the load.
- Snug the shoulder straps so they wrap your shoulders without taking the weight.
- Pull the load lifters (on bigger packs) and clip the sternum strap across your chest.
If the hipbelt sits on your waist or the shoulder straps leave a gap at the top, the torso length is wrong. Packs with an adjustable back, like the Osprey Tempest 22 (35.5 to 48 cm torso range) or the Hikelite 32, let you fine-tune this.
If standard harnesses dig in at the chest or the hipbelt slips, try a women's-specific fit.
Hydration reservoir or water bottles?
Both work. A reservoir lets you sip little and often while you walk. Bottles are easier to clean and show exactly how much you have left.
- Choose a reservoir if you hike long, steady climbs and tend to forget to drink.
- Choose bottles if you mix water with electrolytes, share water with kids, or hate cleaning tubes.
- Do both for full days: water in a reservoir, electrolyte drink in a side-pocket bottle.
In heat, reservoirs need care. Empty and dry them after every hike, because a damp reservoir left in a hot car or cupboard tends to grow mould quickly. None of our picks lists a reservoir as included, so budget for one if you want it.
When and where can you hike in the UAE, and what are the rules?
The hiking season runs from October to April. The Jebel Jais visitor site gives exactly that window and advises avoiding midday hikes in the warmer months. Outside the season, temperatures in the 40s C make long hikes a heat-illness risk, even early in the day.
Jebel Jais, Ras Al Khaimah
The trails are open to the public and you do not need a guide. Guided walks run from 2.5 km to 9.6 km, with the longer routes rated for experienced hikers and taking 5 to 6 hours. Groups should be limited to 10 people unless registered in advance with the Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority (RAKTDA). The site also lists what to carry: at least 3 litres of water per person, rehydration drinks, energy snacks, sturdy shoes, sunscreen, a hat and a fully charged phone. Emergency number: 999.
An 80 km Grand Loop was announced in September 2026 as a multi-day route linking the existing trails, with hiking and camping. It is still in development, so do not plan a trip around it yet. When it opens, it is exactly the kind of route a 45 to 50 litre pack is for.
Hatta, Dubai
Hatta's marked trails total 32.6 km across 5 routes, graded and colour-coded. The official advice is to tell someone where you are going, carry a trail map, carry the right equipment and keep your phone fully charged. A 20 to 30 litre daypack covers any single route.
Heat, wind and grit
Three UAE conditions are hard on packs. Heat bakes zips, coatings and reservoir plastic if you leave the pack in a parked car. Wind on exposed ridges catches loose straps and items clipped to the outside, so use the compression straps. Dust and grit wear zips, so brush them out and close them fully. If your hike ends with a swim in a wadi pool or at the beach, rinse the pack in fresh water and dry it in the shade.
For overnight trips, our UAE camping season guide covers permits by emirate, and our 10 essentials for hiking checklist covers what goes inside the pack.
How to choose a hiking backpack: the criteria that matter
- Volume for your usual trip. Day hikes: 20 to 30 L. Long days and light overnights: 32 to 45 L. Multi-day: 50 L and up.
- Back system. Tensioned mesh for hot walking; a closer fit for scrambling.
- Hipbelt. Padded, with pockets, on anything you will fill with 3 litres of water. A thin webbing strap only stabilises; it does not carry.
- Torso fit. Check the size range or adjustable back against your measurement.
- Water carry. A reservoir sleeve plus two side pockets that hold a 1 litre bottle.
- Pack weight. The daypacks in our picks weigh 0.67 to 1.03 kg where stated; the framed 44 to 56 litre packs weigh about 1.6 to 1.7 kg.
- Raincover. Useful for winter mountain showers. Several picks include one.
- Access. Panel loaders are easier for day trips; top loaders with a side or bottom zip suit overnights.
Who should not buy a big framed pack: if you only do 2 to 4 hour hikes, a 44 litre or bigger pack is weight and money you do not need. Buy a good daypack and borrow for the rare overnight.

Daypack vs overnight pack: which should you buy first?
Buy the daypack first. Most UAE hiking is day hiking, and a 22 to 32 litre pack gets used every weekend of the season. If you camp by car and walk a short way to the pitch, a duffel and a daypack do the job; keep a headlamp from our camping lights guide in the lid pocket.
Hiking backpack checklist
- Volume matches your usual trip: 20 to 30 L for days, 44 L and up for nights
- Torso measured from C7 to hip-bone level, and the pack's range covers it
- Padded hipbelt that sits on your hip bones
- Ventilated back for walking, closer fit if you scramble a lot
- Room for at least 3 litres of water per person
- Reservoir sleeve and bottle pockets you can reach
- Raincover included, or budget for one
- Pockets on the hipbelt for phone, sunscreen and snacks
- Reservoir emptied and dried after every hike
- Pack stored indoors, not in a hot car, between trips
Our verdict
For most people hiking in the UAE, the Osprey Hikelite 26 is the pack to buy: light, well ventilated and big enough for 3 litres of water plus the essentials. On a tighter budget, the CamelBak Rim Runner X22 gives you a ventilated, reservoir-ready pack for less, and the Lowe Alpine Vector 30 is the cheapest sensible option for easy hikes. Women who want a fitted harness should start with the Osprey Tempest 22. If you plan winter overnights, the Stratos 44 keeps the ventilated back on a framed pack, and the Rook 50 is the value choice for weekend trips.
Hiking backpack FAQs
What size backpack do I need for a day hike in the UAE?
A 20 to 30 litre daypack covers almost every UAE day hike. It fits 3 litres of water, snacks, sun protection, a first aid kit and a winter layer. Go for 18 to 24 litres for short half-day routes, and 25 to 30 litres for full days in the Hajar Mountains or longer Jebel Jais trails.
How much water should I carry when hiking in the UAE?
At least 3 litres per person, which is the minimum the Jebel Jais visitor site recommends, plus rehydration drinks. Carry it all from the car, because there are no refill points on most mountain routes. In warmer weather, carry more and choose a shorter route. Remember that 3 litres adds about 3 kg to your pack.
Is a mesh back worth it for hiking in hot weather?
For most UAE hikes, yes. A tensioned mesh back holds the pack off your body so air can move, which keeps your back cooler and drier on long climbs. The trade-off is slightly less stability on technical scrambles, where a closer-fitting pack with ventilation channels can feel more secure.
How do I measure my torso length for a backpack?
Measure from the bony bump at the base of your neck, the C7 vertebra, down to the level of the top of your hip bones. Have someone help you, as it is very hard to measure alone. Compare the result with the size range on the product page, or choose a pack with an adjustable back.
Do I need a hipbelt on a daypack?
If you carry 3 litres of water, yes. A padded hipbelt moves most of the weight off your shoulders and onto your hips, around 80 percent according to the Washington Trails Association. Thin webbing belts only stop the pack swinging. For short city walks a webbing belt is fine.
When is hiking season in the UAE?
October to April. The Jebel Jais visitor site gives that window and advises avoiding midday hikes when it is warmer. In summer, temperatures in the 40s C make long hikes risky even early in the day. In season, start early and finish before the hottest hours.
Do I need a guide or permit to hike Jebel Jais?
No guide is needed; the trails are open to the public. Guided walks are optional. Groups should be limited to 10 people unless registered in advance with RAKTDA. Tell someone your route and return time, carry a charged phone, and call 999 in an emergency.
