The Coghlan's Magnesium Fire Starter is a back up way to light a fire when matches are wet or a lighter has run dry. Scrape magnesium shavings from the bar into a small pile of tinder, then strike the built in sparking insert to ignite them; the shavings burn at around 2,982 C and catch even damp kindling.
One bar makes enough shavings for hundreds of fires, and it weighs only about 40 g. Keep it in your camping kit, car emergency box or survival bag for desert and mountain trips.
