How to choose the right motorcycle helmet size?
Easier said than done. To find the correct helmet size, simply measure the circumference of your head:
- Take a dressmaker’s tape measure
- Wrap it around the skull, just above the head and ears
- Measure the cm.
Head measurement in cm. Size Equivalent to: 52-53 52 XXS 53-54 54 XS 55-56 56 S 57-58 58 M 59-60 60 L 61-62 62 XL 63-64 64 XXL
To make sure that the helmet you have chosen is the right size, you need to put it on: once you have put it on, the helmet should fit you perfectly, slightly tight, i.e. snug at the point you first measured with a tape measure. It should feel the same as when you put on a cap or hat.
Then, you should also feel a slight compression on the cheek pads. The strap, finally, should be well attached to the neck, with a minimum margin so as not to create discomfort.
How to choose between two very similar sizes
It often happens that you cannot decide between two sizes, which may differ only slightly. How can you choose the right motorcycle helmet size in this case?
The general rule is to opt for the smallest size : choose the size that best suits you, because it is likely that, over time and with repeated use, the internal padding will compress slightly, freeing up a few millimetres of space. With shells that are too wide, you risk finding yourself with an unsafe helmet after a few years.
If the helmet moves around too much, sliding around on your head, it means the size is too big. If the helmet stays firmly in place, you have found the perfect fit.
A helmet that is too loose or too tight causes constant discomfort, distracting you from riding and ruining the enjoyment of riding.
